Review: God of War on PC Between then and now?

God of War on PC

New God of War was released in 2018 and it was such a masterpiece that was rated as "Amazing" when it was released Watching Kratos and his son Atreus fight together while experiencing all the amazing father-son relationship it was absolutely wonderful, all with packed action gameplay that the franchise is known for.

Now, 4 years later, that epic journey can be re-examined on the computer, too. The release of God of War on PC in 2022 is very welcome, but it also brings with it many improvements and tweaks that the PlayStation 4 couldn't implement well. Don't get us wrong, the game was great in terms of graphics and gameplay on the console, but on PC it feels like a whole new game, no matter how many times you've stamped it.

It was an interesting experience to play God of War with mouse and keyboard. While my instinct was to play it on the computer with a console, I tried the keyboard and mouse in the first half of the game to see how my experience with it would change. Aiming was definitely easier with the mouse, making it easy to target flying enemies or focus on a specific enemy at a time. Movement controls are also smooth, and the game allows you to remap almost any key to make it easier to navigate and fight. I'd recommend resetting the default Q button for the bouncing because it's a little hard to tap and hold and move at the same time. But whether you reset the buttons or keep the default mappings, the game control is very good using the mouse and keyboard. You choose to complete playing the rest of the game with your Xbox One S console, which is fully supported by the game. You can also use a PlayStation controller if you want a more familiar feel, but no matter which console you're using, the controls are smooth and great.

Another aspect that the game has improved is ease of use, now adding an option to auto-run (instead of holding a button), a permanently active aiming grid, as well as a complete mouse and keyboard reset. Other options are also available such as removing the need to tap and hold a button to perform a command, resetting Spartan's Rage ability, and text reading options.

Of course, just moving the game to the computer, it will get greater improvements in graphics and performance, and here the splendor of the game appears. With the maximum frame rate raised, there are a lot of visual improvements to the game such as HD shadows, GTAO, and SSDO. By far the biggest change was the inclusion of NVidia DLSS technology for supported GPUs. This allows the game to produce high definition graphics without compromising performance, ensuring smooth gameplay and consistent frame rates throughout the game. With DLSS set to "performance" mode at 1080p, we noticed that while frames were traveling at a comfortable speed between 90-100, various details were erratic and not very sharp, particularly details about fur and hair. But raising DLSS to "quality" mode saw frames drop to around 85fps, but it did offer a level of detail that PS4 never could. Even the fire ember, snowflake, and sparkling ice shards appeared in amazing detail, making every inch of Kratos' world come alive. The difference in quality can't be ignored, and whether you have an NVidia or AMD GPU, you'll benefit from the game's massive improvements since its console days.

4k performance was also good, our computer was equipped with an RTX GeForce 3070Ti GPU and an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X CPU. With all the graphical settings in Ultra and DLSS set to the highest quality, frames ran at 75-80fps comfortably, making it an absolutely unforgettable way to experience God of War. Believe us when we tell you that God of War on PC is an experience we haven't tried before on console, and we won't test it until God of War: Ragnarok arrives on PS5. For devices that may struggle to keep up with the demands of playing the game, God of War also has NVidia Reflex, compatibility ensuring that every key or click of a button instantly transitions into the game.

For gamers lucky enough to own an ultra-widescreen PC, God of War on PC also supports a 21:9 aspect ratio, so gameplay and cinematic scenes span the entire screen for an immersive and visually stunning experience. Whether you're facing waves of enemies or enjoying a quiet boat ride while listening to Mimir stories, this is definitely a different way to experience God of War. HDR technology on G-Sync-enabled displays also brings game graphics to life, helping to brighten the colors of the world and bring out the characters in the detailed worlds you travel through.

Conclusion

God of War on PC gives a great feel and graphics that make it feel like a whole new game, and no matter how many times you stamp it on the console, you will want to try it again on the PC too. It's a great game originally, and the visual improvements that the PC version offers make it even more fun. Whether you've played in 1080p or upped it to gorgeous 4k, God of War has never looked as good on PC. For players who have been waiting to play this masterpiece.
